DESCRIPTION:Concert Details \nLink to Streaming \nConcert Program \nJoin Windy City Winds as we kick off our 9th formal concert season and welcome renowned Dutch composer\, arranger and conductor Johan De Meij to conduct his Symphony #1 “The Lord of the Rings” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday\, November 18. The concert will mark the 35th anniversary of his composing this enormously popular five-movement symphony\, inspired by the trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien – an epic piece of music\, befitting an epic story. First performed in 1988\, the symphony won the Sudler Composition Prize and has been recorded by top-tier ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra. De Meij and Windy City Winds will perform the new 2023 Revised Edition\, reorchestrated by the composer. De Meij will also conduct his Windy City Overture and Downtown Divertimento (3rd mvt. – “Hitting the Highline”). The program will open with the Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare by Richard Strauss. The concert will be at St. Pauls United Church of Christ\, 2335 N Orchard in Chicago\, and admission is free.  Audience members can meet the composer at a reception immediately after the concert\, celebrating Johan De Meij’s 70th birthday.

SUMMARY:Fall 2019 Concert: “World Travels” – Friday evening November 22\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Our fall concert will celebrate our 5th season by opening with one of the most popular works from our past 4 seasons\, Festive Overture by Shostakovich.  “World Travels” will feature music from Russia\, Australia\, China\, England\, West Africa\, Argentina\, and Mexico.  We are proud to feature our own Keegan White as soprano saxophone soloist on Astor Piazzolla’s elegiac tango Oblivion. \nOur season will feature composers of color\, including music by Dr. Shawn Okpebholo\, professor of music at Wheaton College\, Major Dwayne S. Milburn (US Army\, retired)\, and Chinese-American female composer Chen Yi.  We also will be working with talented young Chicago composer Joon Park on a new composition. \nOur programs will feature 9 original works for band\, including works by Gustav Holst\, Percy Grainger\,  John Mackey\, John Barnes Chance\, Claude T. Smith\, and Chicago composer James Stephenson.  Our arrangements are by the very best arrangers for wind band\, including Donald Hunsberger\, Robert Reynolds\, John Krance and Robert Russell Bennett.

The concert will feature guest conductor Dr. Bruce Moss\, Director of Bands at Bowling Green State University (OH) and Music Director of the Wheaton Municipal Band (IL). The concert will feature music by Grainger\, Reed\, Schuman\, Sousa\, John Williams and Leonard Bernstein.
